Helping Integrate Social and Emotional Wellbeing into K-12 Education
Social and emotional wellbeing in childhood and youth is proven to support positive mental health, improve academic performance and contribute to favourable life outcomes. Given the amount of time young people spend in school, this setting presents a unique opportunity to support and promote wellbeing. And yet, in Canada, our education system does not consistently recognize social and emotional wellbeing as a core part of its role. Why focus on social and emotional wellbeing in schools?
- Schools are the number 1 setting to promote wellbeing among children and youth.
- An emphasis on social and emotional wellbeing during school hours leads to an 11 percentage-point improvement in academic performance.
- Investing in student wellbeing reduces the incidence of bullying, violence, conduct disorders, anxiety, depression and suicide.
WellAhead is a philanthropic initiative that aims to improve child and youth mental health by integrating social and emotional wellbeing into K-12 education. We believe that all young people deserve to be in school environments that support their wellbeing. For that to happen, we need to move beyond one-off efforts: all teachers and schools need to have the capacity and conditions to take on this role in a sustainable fashion. WellAhead is focused on long-term change – shifting culture, structures, priorities, and practices of schools and the education system at-large to better incorporate social and emotional wellbeing as a key role. As a philanthropic initiative, we act as an enabler and supporter – working with existing organizations, initiatives and leaders to enhance their impact. Integration of wellbeing into K-12 education means that:
Educators have the knowledge, capacity and time to promote student wellbeing in their daily practice.
The school environment and culture is supportive of student wellbeing.
Wellbeing is a priority, with sufficient financial and human resources to back it up.
Wellbeing is reflected in policy, resource flows, curriculum, and measurement frameworks.
Multiple stakeholders are aligned around a shared vision for wellbeing in schools.
The WellAhead model is based on two years of consultation and research on school-based wellbeing efforts. These learnings have been translated into the following core values and principles:
WellAhead brings people together from different stakeholder groups (educators, administrators, students, parents, and community partners) to collectively determine how to advance wellbeing in schools. This approach recognizes the different types of knowledge that exist and how our collective intelligence can shape the most innovative ideas.
Education is an issue of public interest, and requires broad input and buy-in in order to inform future directions. WellAhead aims to include as many people as possible in its processes through wide consultation, fluid opportunities for participation, and novel methods of engagement.
Rather than providing people with a solution, WellAhead supports communities in shaping a vision they can collectively stand behind, and support them in a change process. We aim to act as a catalyst and convenor for community-led efforts.
There is so much that can be gained if we openly share our learnings. WellAhead will make all its tools and materials available, and will actively share what is learned along the way in a manner that sparks discussion and informs practice.
Complex problems are difficult to plan around. As such, WellAhead embraces an emergent approach whereby plans and directions are iteratively and informed by feedback from partners and stakeholders.
WellAhead draws upon a social innovation lab framework to influence systems change through collaborative action.
We have partnered with the MaRS Solutions Lab to inform our process. Key components of the lab approach include:
Bringing together people from multiple perspectives – educators, administrators, parents, students, and community partners – to collectively brainstorm and design solutions.
Taking action to implement ideas in schools and putting resources into evaluating their impact. We will support school communities to explore not only what works but why, to better understand how to effectively build capacity and drive change in schools.
Taking what we learn and sharing it far and wide to influence practice, policy and awareness at all levels. WellAhead will work with participants and stakeholders to acknowledge and validate the importance of social-emotional wellbeing in schools, and what they can easily and naturally do to make a positive difference in students’ lives.
